1.mont-bell waterproof fabric three-level system
As the world's leading manufacturer of waterproof outerwear, mont-bell understands that the requirement of high-quality waterproof outerwear is not as simple as "waterproof". Different people have different opinions on the breathability, weight, converted volume and price of the outerwear in different occasions. Due to different requirements, mont-bell uses three different waterproof fabrics for different purposes.
2. GORE-TEX
The acclaimed GORE-TEX is highly waterproof and breathable, making it the choice for top-of-the-line outerwear. After more than 20 years of development, mont-bell has become the largest GORE-Tex field clothing manufacturer in Japan. Gore-Tex itself is a very thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene film ePTFE (expanded Poly-Tetra-Fluoro-Ethylene), which is sandwiched on the fabric. It is characterized by 1.4 billion small holes per square inch. The size of each hole is only 1/20,000 of a water droplet, but it is 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule, so it only allows water vapor to pass through but not water spots. The water pressure is as high as 45,000mm, and the air permeability is as high as 13,500g/m2/24hrs, so it has excellent waterproof and breathable function. Also, because the fabric used by mont-bell is lighter and more airy than normal, its air permeability is also higher than that of other companies' products.
Another feature of mont-bell GORE-TEX jackets is that there are very few GORE-Tex marks on the clothes, because from the beginning, mont-bell has used the function of Gore-Tex to make high-performance clothing, rather than using Gore-Tex. Tex fabrics are used as a selling point, so there will be no Gore-Tex marks on the clothes, but all those with the words P.T.F.E. on the material description are Gore-Tex products.
3.Dry-Tec waterproof breathable membrane
For those who require extreme lightness, mont-bell has specially developed Dry-Tec tarpaulin, which is waterproof up to 30,000mm water pressure, similar to GORE-TEX, and has a breathability of up to 6,000 g/㎡/24hrs degree, while the weight is 1/3 lighter than GORE-Tex, and the equivalent volume is nearly half smaller. It is a new generation of super PU waterproof and breathable membrane developed by mont-bell. Its secret is to mix PolyUrethane (polyurethane) and Ceramic (siliconized carbon) technology and synthesize it with a three-layer structure. The bottom layer is an extremely tough film that binds the fabric and resists water pressure. The pores are only 0.1 mm in size. The center is a highly breathable layer with larger pores (5 - 10 mm), and the last layer contains siliconized Carbon, thin and wear-resistant protective film with 5 mm pores. This unique structure makes Dry-Tec exceptionally waterproof and breathable while remaining lightweight. Other advantages of Dry-Tec include: the reduced volume is very small and it is very washable and wear-resistant, which is very suitable for the needs of active sports people. (1 mm is 1/1000mm)
4. Hydro Breeze-PXTM
Where practicality is required, MontBell opts for Hydro Breeze tarps. It is a material developed by Montbell for a new generation of practical all-weather outerwear. Likewise, the pores are only sized to allow perspiration to pass through and block water droplets. The water resistance is up to 20,000mm water pressure, and the air permeability is also a good 4000g/㎡/24hrs, which is more airy than ordinary waterproof raincoats. Also, it is lighter and softer than other tarps. Hydro Breeze is quite washable, retaining 15,000mm water resistance after 20 washes. The new generation of Hydro Breeze-PX is more durable and foldable than ever before, making it the best choice for making heavyweight wind and raincoats. (1 mm is 1/1000mm)
5. GORE Dry Loft
A fabric developed by W.L. GORE in the United States using GORE-TEX fabric technology for down jackets. Gore researchers found that the fabric of the down jacket needs to have extremely high breathability, so that the sweat discharged by the human body can be quickly discharged, and it will not be absorbed by the down and cause the down to tangle; on the other hand, it must also resist The ability of strong storm and snow, Dry Loft is developed for this requirement. It has stronger moisture permeability than ordinary Gore-Tex fabrics, but can withstand strong winds up to 32km per hour, and has extremely high water repellency for snow protection. The 40D ripstop nylon surface specially selected by mont-bell is extra soft, so that the jacket will not feel puffy. (Since it only snows, not rain, in extreme cold, the stitching of all Dry Loft jackets will not be covered with rain tape.)
6. Goose Down
It is undeniable that down is the most superior among all kinds of thermal insulation materials, all because of its soft structure and the ability to be folded very small, but the quality of down is very uneven, and only high-quality down has these advantages. Therefore, mont-bell specially selects 590 and 650 grade goose down from North America, and undergoes strict cleaning, sterilization, and selection processes to produce finished products to ensure that its down products have stronger thermal insulation than others, and Good moisture resistance. The specification of down is expressed by its filling capacity. It is calculated by how many cubic inches an ounce of down can fill. Generally, it is usually between 300-500, and 650+ is the best of the best.
7. Exceloft Microfiber Insulation Foam
Montbell is a new generation of chemical fiber insulation developed using modern microfiber technology. Compared with down, although the thermal insulation ability of chemical fiber is slightly inferior, it is more resistant to moisture than down and the price is more affordable. Exceloft is composed of only 8 Denier macaroni fibers and 0.8 Denier microfibers. The macaroni fiber makes it more elastic, and the surface tension of the microfiber can fully grasp the air for warmth. In addition, it uses the elastic ring folding method of cotton production, which is different from the general winding type, which can make its elasticity and pressure resistance performance better, and its thermal insulation ability is better than the ordinary thermal insulation cotton.
8.3M Thinsulate Ultra Thin Insulation Foam
Ultra-thin thermal insulation sponge produced by 3M Company in the United States. It is composed of Olefin fibers that are only a fraction of the size of a hair. Its thermal insulation principle is to fully grasp the air molecules with the help of the surface tension of the microfiber surface layer, so that its thermal insulation ability is much thicker than that of down or macaroni. Even higher, it is mainly used for outdoor thermal jackets that require light and thin.
9. Climaplus -- mont-bell's new concept of Mauri series
In order to make the most ideal wool coat, mont-bell organized the best Mauri cloth it collected in various countries into the Climaplus series, aiming to collect the essence of the products of the world's major Mauri cloth factories, including the pioneers of modern Mauri. Malden (Polartec), USA, Huntingdon, Canada (Yukon 2000) and other world-class Mauritius factories formulate the best clothing collections. The overall performance also has many advantages such as strong thermal insulation, low water absorption, quick drying, light weight, softness and no lint, and is the most ideal wool substitute.
